EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

The Edinburgh International Film Festival was also established by the Edinburgh Film Guild in 1947 which actually makes it the longest running film festival in the world. Also taking part during the festival season in August, although as of 2008 the new date will be June, the Edinburgh International Film Festival shows a large variety of local and international movies, shorts, animations and documentaries. All films featured are UK premiers and quite often international premiers too.

The Film Festival is separated into several separate categories. The ‘Gala’ which all have a well know actor or director attached to them. The ‘British Gala’ which are featuring a known British actor or director. The ‘Rosebud’ which are films from first or second time directors. ‘Night Moves’ which are horror and action with limited international release or new directors. Other categories include Mirrorball, Document, Retrospective, Black Box, In-Person and Directors Showcase.

Some of the notable films screened in the last few years: Mrs Brown, The Full Monty, Love is the Devil, Ratcatcher, East is East, Run Lola Run, Billy Elliot, Amelie, 16 Years of Alcohol, Young Adam, Infernal Affairs, American Splendor and the Motorcycle Diaries. Notable honary patrons Sir Sean Connery and Tilda Swinton also add to this festivals fame, quality and popularity.
