OTHER EDINBURGH FESTIVALS

Although the majority of the widely attended celebrations occur in August there are several other noted events that take place throughout the year. These include the Ceilidh Culture event, the Edinburgh International Science Fair, OneEighty, Edinburgh Easter Festival, Dark City Festival, Children’s International Theatre Festival, Meadows Festival, Scottish International Storytelling Festival and many more.

One celebration that we cannot fail to mention is the Hogmanay every New Year’s Eve. There are many customs associated in Scotland for Hogmanay such as ‘first footin’ being where traditionally the first person to cross the threshold of a house after midnight is to bring a gift which will bring good luck for the coming year to the household. Originally the Edinburgh celebration started as a street party but due to its popularity it became an officially organized event in 1993. Due to un unprecedented attendance of 300,000 people in 1996 the council were forced to make it a sealed area ticketed event with a limit of 100,000 people. Today the celebrations range over 4 days with processions, displays and fireworks but the obviously most popular night is Hogmanay itself and vast amounts of whisky is consumed! With all these celebrations, events and festivals Edinburgh has made a name for itself as a city of culture and will continue to draw visitors from around the globe for many years (and New Years!) to come.
